Readers are particularly drawn to Ehrenburg's prose because of the wider implications present in it, because of the striving to understand and to portray man's entire world, to advance over the links of a chain from man to people. Ehrenburg is a writer with a philosophical bent. He would no doubt find it dull to write a novel without stopping to pass judgement and draw conclusions. That may be one of the reasons why publicistic writing plays such an important part in his prose.

I do not feel that there is a clear line between Ehrenburg's novels, articles for the press and his political writings. The same spirit, the same quality pervades them all. This is the rarest of writers, one whose voice rings out with burning power of appeal both in books and in newspapers. his genre is words that act.
