ENCYLOPEDIA OF SOVIET WRITERS

Azhaev, Vasili Nikolaevich. Born 12 February 1915 in the village of Sotskoye, in the Moscow guberniya. He graduated from the Gorky Literary Institute in 1944. He began appearing in print in 1934. In 1948 he published a collection of stories entitled Zoloto ("Gold"). His 1948 novel Daleko Ot Moskvy ("Far From Moscow") concerned the heroic exploits of workers constructing an oil pipeline in the deep forests of Siberia during the Great Patriotic War. This novel won a State Prize for literature in 1949 and was later made into a movie and an opera.

In 1961, Azhaev published the tale Predisloviye K Zhizni ("Preface to Life"), touching upon the life of Soviet youth.

He won the Order of the Workers' Red Banner.

Azhaev died on 27 April 1968.
